Therapy for Substance Use and Addiction
When our relationship with substances or addictive behaviors starts to take over our lives, it can be hard to reach out for help. Many people feel shame around their substance use or addiction or struggle to see a path forward. At Grounded Wellbeing, we aim to create a safe and non-judgemental space for you to explore what recovery means to you.
Our team utilizes a harm-reduction model in treatment. This model centers the rights and choices of the individual while promoting safe behaviors, self-esteem, and a purpose-filled life. [1] Instead of focusing solely on abstinence, we focus on restoring a holistic sense of well-being. We acknowledge that substances and addictive behaviors are sometimes used to cope with stress or trauma, and that structural inequalities leave some folks more vulnerable to harm than others. [2] Our therapists will work with you to help you develop insight and understanding around your relationship with substances or addictive behaviors so that you are empowered to make choices that are right for you. Whenever possible, we will connect you with the resources you need to address and prevent the harms that are associated with substance use or addictive behaviors.
Dual-diagnosis
An estimated 1 in 3 people who are diagnosed with a substance use disorder will also be diagnosed with another psychiatric disorder - this is known as a dual-diagnosis. [3] Our team uses an integrative approach to address both concerns concurrently, understanding that the relationship between substance use and other mental health concerns might have reciprocal factors. In sessions, you can expect us to explore the underlying causes and help you develop insight and coping strategies to manage the symptoms of both mental health and substance use. We can also work with you to coordinate care with your entire support team ensuring that your holistic needs are met.
Sometimes, when we carry traumatic experiences or attachment wounds, the pain can be so overwhelming that we seek comfort through anything we can find. When that source of comfort becomes addictive or interferes with our life, it might be time to address the root cause. Our team can help you address trauma through an attachment-based lens so you can heal your nervous system and feel more secure in your relationships.
