Navigating Fear and Uncertainty during Election Season
Hi friends — this is a heavy week. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, afraid, and powerless after Tuesday, you’re not alone. Many in our community are scared about the future and what this election result means for safety and basic human rights. I want to start by saying that these feelings are completely natural to have and beyond that, valid.
In this heaviness, it can understandably be so hard to feel hopeful about the future. Below, I’m going to list some ways that we recommend leveraging to navigate this time. I also want to emphasize that as a practice, we at Grounded Wellbeing are in your corner. We love you. You deserve to take up space, and we will be continually fighting to protect this community’s right to exist.
Connection & Community — This is listed as #1 for a reason. Connection is the most important component to getting through a time like this. When we connect, we access more of our collective power. If you feel isolated and don’t know where to start, start by finding spaces where you feel safe & understood. Having a space where you can drop your guard a bit can create space to breathe, process, and focus on what you need. These spaces can take the form of a trusted friend group, online forums or support communities, or in-person support groups at local community centers. We will list a few options at the end of this post.
Set Boundaries — Please make sure you’re prioritizing your well-being and setting boundaries as much as needed. Say no to less supportive spaces when you need and are able to. Take breaks from engaging in ways that drain your spoons. Protect yourself in the ways that you can during this time.
Carve Out Moments for Rest & Queer Joy — As much as possible, find moments of rest and joy in your day-to-day lives. This may look like immersing yourself in your latest art project or other hobby or connecting in ways that celebrate the beauty of this community. Watch your comfort show or listen to comfort music. This community is filled with the kindest, most giving human beings and that deserves to be celebrated.
Remember Our History of Resilience — I know this election feels like several steps back. Sometimes it can be encouraging to look at the history of how far we’ve come in fighting for our rights. We 100% have the power to get through this, too.
Have a Safety Plan — Identify the support people you can reach out to if you get too overwhelmed. Search for an affirming therapist if you don’t yet have one. Leverage available crisis lines if needed. Here are the ones we recommend:
The Trevor Project: 866-488-7386 or text START to 678-678
National Suicide Prevent Lifeline: 800-273-8255
Crisis Text Line: text START to 741-741
Trans Lifeline: 877-565-8860
Again, we are in your corner and we don’t plan on going anywhere. We will get through this together.
